Hallowe’en Update

Hallowe’en Update

Ms Comerford’s junior infant class

We had a fun-filled October here in room 4 with lots of Autumn and Halloween themed activities. The children loved playing in the Witches Den making potions, building haunted houses and creating some ‘Púca’ art! We got to explore lots of maths activities and games and learned all about 2D shapes! We are really enjoying our new playground and love earning some extra time out in the fresh air after all our hard work! We are very excited for Halloween!

Ms McLoughney’s junior infant class

This month has been a whirlwind of excitement and learning for our junior infants. From dance lessons

with Megan to learning the thriller dance along with the rest of the school. We learned about Autumn this

month too by going on a nature walk and discussing the signs of Autumn in class. We celebrated

Halloween with imaginative play and craft activities during Aistear. We look forward to more adventures

and learning opportunities in the coming month!

Ms Dooley’s senior infants class

October has been a busy month in Senior Infants. We continued our learning on the theme of Autumn, collecting lots of leaves in our school yard and using them for leaf rubbings and leaf printing. We also created autumn trees by tracing our arms to create a tree shape and adding in finger print leaves in beautiful autumn colours. We even learnt about the farmer in Autumn and how this is the time of year for harvesting lots of different crops.

Literacy stations have begun and we are having great fun playing games, building words and sentences and reading, of course! In Maths we have been learning all about the number “6”. We made sets of 6, explored the story of 6 and made the number using our playdough and whiteboard markers. We have also been learning about 2-D shapes. We went on a fun shapes hunt in our classroom.

We are very excited for Halloween. In class we have been learning about Halloween traditions such as dressing up, Halloween games and decorations. We made our own Halloween pumpkins and bats which we hung up outside our door to it a little spooky. In playtime we have really enjoyed Halloween stations. We created our own “Spell Books”, Halloween pictures and whizzed up some super, spooky Halloween potions in our role-play area, “The Witches’ Den”. We are so excited for dressing up on the last day. Mr Tooher has been teaching us a spooky dance which we cannot wait to perform at assembly.

Ms Shanahan’s 1st class

We learnt about schools in the past and visited a classroom in the Heritage Centre- we saw the desks they used, the chalk boards and the cane. We did lots of lovely Halloween art and made Oreo Spiders.

We had Greta Ryan from Heritage Ireland in to teach us about nature around us and we made prints using colours from berries and leaves.

We all became members of Nenagh library and had stories read to us by the librarian Margaret.

We learnt about time, how to solve word problems and lots of number work in maths.

It was a fun and busy month – enjoy the holidays everyone.

Ms McCutcheon’s 1st & 2nd class

The boys and girls in 1st and 2nd class have had great fun this October. For Maths week they played Maths games, went on a Maths Trail around the school and carried out surveys in our classroom.

They children designed lovely autumn trees and squirrels during art lessons and also created spooky Pumkin faces for Halloween.

They loved interviewing their parents and grandparents about toys and games in the past and they presented their interviews during History lessons in school.

We also learned how to play some card games which was great fun.

The class have been brilliant swimmers this month and we will finish our swimming lessons in November. We are all looking forward to the well-deserved midterm break. Well done boys and girls!

Mr Smith’s 3rd class

October has been very busy in Room 1.

We all enjoyed the gaelic football and hurling blitz in McDonagh Park.

Mr Buckley’s 4th class

This month we were working on multiplication in maths. We investigated different ways to make groupings with concrete materials. In Gaeilge we have been practicing our Halloween vocabulary and reading a scary Halloween story.

We are learning how to use Google Docs and are completing our ‘Transport’ project through Google Classroom. We have created a scarecow called ‘Scar McGrath’ who was involved in the siege on Bunratty in 1646. We have also written a recount story describing Scar’s background. We began reading ‘Tom Crean Ice man’ and are learning about how tough exploration was 100 years ago. We created scary Halloween goblins for art.

We had a very busy start to the year in mrs McCabes class. We went to the library every week during October. We visited Éanna ni Lamhna about her new book and also Emma Larkin who spoke about their new books. It was very interesting. We are having fun getting ready for Halloween. We love doing the thriller dance with Mr Tooher.
