Ready for Easter in CBS Primary
Ms Sheary’s junior infant classes
This month was full of celebrations. We started our month by making some lovely Mother’s Day cards and our mammy’s were thrilled with them. We were then very busy celebrating all things Irish. We had great fun during Seachtain na Gaelige. We preformed a song and poem as Gaeilge for the school and we did great. We made some lovely Leprechauns in time for St. Patricks day also. It is nearly Easter time now and we are learning about the Easter story. We are also making some lovely Easter chicks and we will make some nice chocolate Easter nests with chocolate eggs in them. We are looking forward to our two weeks off and we will be ready to hit the ground running when we return in April for the last term.
Ms Comerford’s and Ms Dooley’s senior infant classes
This month we have been busy learning about Spring. We learnt about spring flowers and what they need to grow. We planted our own cress seeds, made lots of spring flowers and set up a fun “Garden Centre” role play area. We also learned about the lifecycle of the frog.
In Maths we are enjoying our maths stations. We revised the Story of 9 and now we are learning all about the number 10!
Senior Infants really enjoyed Seachtain na Gaeilge. We made “Seamróga” and learned lots of new songs and poems “as Gaeilge”. We had great fun dressing up for Lá Glas and gave an amazing performance at our Ceolchoirm. Our teachers were very proud of us!
We cannot believe that Easter is almost here! It has been a fun week in school. We have been making Easter bunnies and chicks. We are now looking forward to the Easter break before we return to school for an exciting Term 3!
Ms McCutcheon’s 2nd class
The boys in second class have been working very hard this month. They have been engaging in debates in English and have completed some excellent pieces of Persuasive Writing. They shared this writing with Ms. Shanahan’s Class. They also built 3D shapes in maths using marshmallows and tooth picks.
The boys loved preparing for St. Patrick’s Day. They made beautiful shamrock collages in art, as you can see in the pictures. They also sang two songs in the school ceolchoirm and took part in a table quiz for Seachtain na Gaeilge.
We have been taking part in the Active School’s ‘Run Around Europe’ initiative and the boys have been running laps of the track every day. Keep up the great work lads!
Mr Smith’s 3rd class
March has been another busy month for 3rd class.
In gaeilge, the boys in our class participated in Seachtain na Gaeilege. We performed at the cheolchoirm, we entered the seanfhocail competition and we also participated in Tráth na gCeist and bhaineamar taitneamh mór as an seachtain agus as na gníomhaíochtaí.
This month also saw our class complete their persuasive writing pieces. The boys then presented their final drafts to Ms Dooley’s senior infant class.
In SESE, we have been learning about Modern Egypt while also engaging with ancient Egypt and the time of the Pharaohs.
In PE we have concluded our rugby with Pat. The boys really enjoyed it. Thanks Pat!!!
In art, we were very busy. We designed our own Nemes art. These turned out brilliant. We also entered the Images School Art initiative.
We are looking to Easter. Beannachtaí na Cásca oraibh go léir!!!!
Ms Shanahan’s 4th class
March was a busy month with lots of fun for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We sang Zombie as gaeilge agus Is Mise fear an cheoil for our lá glas. We really enjoying both songs and thanks to Mr. Buckley for playing his guitar for us. We learnt all about Japan in geography. In English we worked on our persuasive writing – we wrote letters to President Higgins persuading him to put an end to homework as he promised last year – we read these letters to second class. We also read books to Senior Infants for World Book Day. We are doing the ‘run around Europe’ challenge and running enough laps to try to get to Athens – we have run 1150km so far! Some of our class represented our school in a chess tournament in Limerick and did really well. We made mars bar cake as a class treat. We made jars filled with all the things we love about our mums for Mothers Day. Happy Easter everyone.
Ms Maher’s 6th class
March has been a very busy month in Room 8. We are playing hurling with Pat and some of the students from TY. It is also Seachtain na Gaeilge and we are speaking more Irish throughout the school day. We also had a Tráth na gCeist organised by Mr Smith with the other 6th classes – we really enjoyed this it was great fun. We also designed some pictures for the Sean Fhocal competition. Sr. Essie also called to see us and spoke to us about our Confirmation and the theme for this year – faith, hope and love. On Friday 22nd of March we will go to the Secondary School for our Entrance Exam – we are all excited about going. Happy Easter everyone!!!
Ms McCabe’s 2nd to 6th class
We had a busy March. We went to mass every week to prepare us for our Confirmation. We also decided to spend more time improving our touch typing as it will help us when we go to secondary school. We try to practice every day for 10 minutes. We really enjoyed doing the St Patrick’s ceolchoirm with our classes. It was so much fun and everyone was included. We are looking forward to Easter next, and the long evenings to follow.
Persuasive Writing
Writing is a fundamental skill for communication and the act of writing is part of the language learning process. The ability to write well is a skill which impacts on the child’s ability to learn in many other areas. There is a general acceptance of the need to develop the Process of writing.
We have been learning persuasive writing over the past few weeks
Persuasive writing is:
·Oral informal debate on personally significant topics
·Exposure to visual adverts discussing the main objective of the ad
·Debates: Write both sides of the arguments in relation to global topics and issues of interest
·Study media advertising, highlighting the persuasive tactics
Eg: Job Application, Menu, Headlines, Slogan, Advertisement
